Close Up is a week-long learning adventure in Washington, D.C. This government studies program is unlike any other trip to the nation’s capital. It is a total citizenship education experience, and it is fun!
Close Up brings civic lessons to life by taking students behind the scenes and allowing them to witness their government in action. Students’ days are packed from morning to night with activities including study visits to Washington landmarks and memorials, seminars with national leaders, and small-group workshops. One entire day is spent on Capitol Hill. In addition, students spend an evening at the theater, attend a formal banquet and dance, and spend time with their classmates and teacher exploring the city.
Shields Valley students sign up as sophomores and juniors during odd years. We go to Washington, D.C. in the spring on even years. This allows students to raise money for two years. Last year, eight students and two teachers participated. Everyone agreed that it was one of the best things they have done in school. See Mrs. Held or Mr. Huff if you are interested in joining.
